DIFF - Any recommendations?
So, the Dublin International Film Festival website is up and running here, and apart from "the Farreller" opening the festival, I'm not familiar with any of the movies. So does anyone have any ideas on what I should go see? Or, indeed, avoid?
Blade Runner is worth checking out on the big screen. I don't even like it, but have to admit the newly restored version looks dazzling.
Crazy Love is a fascinating documentary that will leave you with your jaw on the floor.
I'm a Cyborg is totally different to the director's "Vengeance" trilogy but absolutely insane and well worth a watch.
Katyn is one that I've not seen, but since it's just been nominated for an Oscar I guess it must have something going for it.
Once - well, who doesn't know about this one.
Pandora's Box - never seen it, but an old silent movie with live musical accompaniment is always fun.
Silent Light is adored by the critics, but I'm the one dissenting voice who says avoid.
The Orphanage is a Mexican horror that has been getting a lot of good word of mouth Stateside so could be worth a look.
The War on Democracy is John Pilger at his best.
We Are Together is a wonderful documentary that manages to be both depressing and heartwarming at the same time.
Comrades in Dreams is another great documentary that will resonate with anyone who has a passion for cinema.
Apart from the above, I recommend taking a dip into the short film programmes or just picking a couple of totally unknown films at random - it often leads to the most exciting discoveries.
